Like many migrants from Europe in the 1950s, Mother could not speak English. The women who lived through that time suffered hardship due to a lack of language and work skills.

Following a terrifying accident involving Rachael-the beloved daughter of Paula who is a social worker and lecturer and her husband Colin – their lives are thrown in turmoil. Rachael’s sister Sarah is witness to her parents grief and unravelling. Later when Rachael’s life spins out of control with a heroin habit, Paula parallels Rachael’s addiction when she herself develops a secret gambling problem. Colin tries desperately to force his wife to confront her issues.
